Osama bin Laden dead

Osama bin Laden,Most-wanted terrorist is killed.

Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that killed thousands of Americans, was slain Sunday in a firefight with U.S. forces, ending a manhunt that spanned a frustrating decade.

Osama bin Laden, was shot dead on Monday by U.S. commandos who came by helicopter into the compound where he had lived since 2005.

The original plan was for the Navy SEALs to rappel down into the compound, and that’s how they practiced it in April on a replica of the compound the military constructed in the U.S. on which SEALs Team Six conducted two practice runs.

The operation started with an intelligence lead, and culminated in an operation involving a "small team of Americans". "After a firefight they killed bin Laden."

None of the Americans was killed.

Osama's body is in possession of the US, according to the first reports from the US television networks.

Crowds gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, singing the national anthem and cheering.

President Obama made the highly unusual Sunday night live statement to announce the news at around 11.30pm eastern time.

September Attacks

al-Qaeda has metastasized in the decade since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, expanding its reach and adapting its tactics in ways that make the organization likely to remain the most significant security threat to the United States despite its leader’s demise.

The attacks,  were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States on September 11, 2001.

al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.

Many working in the buildings were killed. Both towers collapsed within two hours, also destroying nearby buildings.
There were no survivors from any of the flights.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden claimed responsibility for the attacks.

After an almost 10-year manhunt for bin Laden, on May 1, 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that American forces had killed bin Laden.
